May 2009 Author of the Month
John Sandford is one of the most accomplished authors of our time. He has written over 25
novels, 19 of them are his "Prey" series that include his character "Lucas Davenport". John
has that rare ability to not only create some of the most intriguing plot lines, but also have rich,
deep characters that bring a story to life. "Rules of Prey" is the first book in the "Prey" series
that starts off the life of Lucas Davenport. His latest and 19th "Prey" release, "Wicked Prey",
is one of the best in the series. John has written three other series, "Kidd", "Virgil Flowers"
and "Night Crew". He has mentioned in previous interviews that he will continue to write
"Prey" novels, and also "Kidd" and "Virgil Flowers" novels. In fact his previous hardcover
book "Heat Lighting" was a "Virgil Flowers" novel. We are pleased the John agreed to
become May's author of the month and recommend that you run to the bookstore and start

The Republicans are coming to St. Paul for their
convention. Throwing a big party is supposed to be fun,
but crashing the party are a few hard cases the police
would rather stayed away. Chief among them is a crew
of professional stick-up men who've spotted several
lucrative opportunities, ranging from political
moneymen with briefcases full of cash, to that
convention hotel with the weakness in its security
system. All that's headache enough for Lucas Davenport
– but what's about to hit him is even worse.
A while back, a stray bullet put a pimp and petty thief
named Randy Whitcomb into a wheelchair, and ever
since, the man has been nursing his grudge into a full
head of psychotic steam. He blames Davenport for the
bullet, but it's no fun just shooting him. That wouldn't
be painful enough. Not when Davenport has a pretty

|Exclusive Interview by John Sandford:
1. What is your favorite all-time book, not yours, and why?
I don't have one, because I've spent my life reading, and in college, majored in American
Studies, which was a cross of American literature and American history. I'm fascinated by the
'history" books of the Bible; my favorite classic works are the Odyssey and the Iliad; I like the
romantic French novels like the "Three Musketeers" and "The Count of Monte Cristo;" my
favorite modern historical novel is probably "The Killer Angels," by Michael Shaara; and I don't
have a favorite among contemporary mystery/thriller writers because I read a lot of them, and
enjoy a lot of them. My favorite non-fiction book, of the last couple of years, anyway, was Pete
Hamill's biography, "Diego Rivera."
